Born and raised in Oakland, Mel Copland has been an active member of the Montclair community for many years. His expertise in Bay Area real estate is evident through his expansive experience and knowledge of both the development and real estate markets. Mel has been a real estate broker since 1976. He has both owned and managed Copland Realty and Lighthouse Properties Inc. realty companies. Currently, Mel is a broker-agent with Alain Pinel Real Esate Company and previously was one of the top 10 producers for all of the Century 21 Heritage Real Estate offices for the past seven years. Receiving over four Centurion Awards from Century 21.
Mel has also built many homes including his personal residence of eighteen years at 7330 Woodrow Drive in Oakland. Mel also developed a ten-lot project at Shepherd Canyon Heights which includes homes built on Tiffany Lane. Mel owned and managed the project and its stages of development. Including: the lot split through City Council, grading of 80,000 cubic yards of fill, installation of all underground utilities, water main, sewer main and the private road. Mel built and sold four homes on the site, the last home was completed in 1996 and is located on Tiffany Lane. In 1980 he was the project manager for an investor group in California for a 60 home development in Plano, Texas where he handled the large development from start to finish. All of this experience in development is why Mel is known as one of the best agents to work with when selling homes or investing in land to build a home.

Mel has maintained an active involvement in his community and has prided himself in helping to preserve Montclair distinctive charm. He has been a two-term president of the Montclair Business Association, president of the Montclair Lyons Club, president of the Corpus Christi Church Mens Club, was on the board of trustees at the Oakland Zoo for 10 years, was a founding member of the Oakland Development Council and many other local organizations. Mel also has always been very active in relief efforts after large emergencies such as the Loma Prieta Earthquake and the Oakland Hills Fire. Mel worked with the Red Cross after the earth quake and helped fight the fire and assist the Oakland Fire Department during the hills fire. Mel is now a very active member with the Red Cross after volunteering for a month in Louisiana and Texas after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the gulf coast. Mel is now heading a group that will create a new program that will begin a process of having external counties come in to assist other disaster stricken counties during emergencies. Recently Mel was a volunteer with members of his church and helped to build 12 homes for disaster victims in Mc Comb, Mississippi.
